Welcome from The Rev. Eleanor Drake Whitelaw +
Greetings in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ:
Let me tell you a little about The Church of the Holy Comforter. We are a pastoral-sized parish with an average attendance of 100 people per Sunday. We are conveniently located about 10 minutes from downtown Montgomery just off the Southern Bypass.
The best way to get to know us is to join us for worship on Sunday mornings. Our 9:00 am service is Holy Eucharist with organ and full choir, and lots of children. The service is usually Rite II, but one Sunday per month we have Rite I. Our music tends toward the traditional with some contemporary. I must say that for a smaller parish, we have a very fine music ministry. Our preaching varies from liturgical to pastoral to topical, but it is always Biblical and Christ-centered. We have a nursery where parents can drop off infants and toddlers beginning at 8:30 am.
In addition to worship, there is lots of social time on Sunday mornings. Breakfast is served at 8:00 am and Sunday School classes for all ages from kindergarten to adults meet at 10:30 am and last about 45 minutes. Coffee hour immediately follows the 9:00 o'clock service and is a great way to meet folks.
Our general weekly calendar can be found here. We have a Food Pantry Ministry that feeds about 100 families per week, an active youth program for junior-high and high-school, a number of very active women's guilds, a chapter of the Daughters of the King, an active Pastoral Care committee, and some organized social groups, such as Foyer, which meet regularly at peoples' homes. More information on all of these ministries can be found here.
The quality of our music program is due to a very talented group of amateur musicians in the choir and a dedicated Organist/Choirmaster, Joel Gregory. He also directs the Montgomery Youth Chorale and other city-wide efforts. The choir is always ready to recruit new singers; if you are interested, choir practice begins at 6:45 on Wednesday evenings.
We were founded in 1886 and we have a hand-carved Altar and reredos executed in oak by Mr. Sials McBee of Monteagle, Tennessee. It was touted to be the "handsomest piece of ecclesiastical work in the South" when it was dedicated in 1889. The history and explanation of the work and designs are presented in a booklet entitled Half a Century -- and more available in our book store.
We are a very diverse parish, theologically and politically and to a lesser extent socially. We draw from the military community and often have those who were once here for an extended stay return to share their lives with us again. We also draw from the surrounding communities including Prattville, Wetumpka, and Millbrook. But whatever our theology, politics or social station, we are committed to Jesus Christ as Lord, the preaching and modeling of the Gospel and reaching out according to Jesus' words: we are to love the Lord our God with all our heart and mind and soul and we are to love our neighbor as our selves.
You are invited to join us and become part of this church family.
Peace and Blessings +
